Today we went to Palo (Tree) Verde (Green) National Park for a boat tour. Our driver/guide picked us up at 7:00 am. It was a 2 hour drive to the park. One the way, he stopped for gas. I've been wondering what the prices are as there are no signs out front like in the US. Diesel was 650 colonies (approx. $1.30 US) a liter. So he paid about $64 US to fill up. 50 liters about 12 galons?
Our driver next stopped places along the road on the way to the park when he found iguanas, macaws and howler monkeys to point out to us. They were just hanging out in the trees. It was so cool! After about an hour of looking, we made it to the boat.
Got on the boat and our driver was also our guide! (I liked that he stayed with us all day and he was so knowledgeable and spoke English too!) He and two other guides would stop the boat every time they found something. They always told us what we were seeing, but I have don't remember what most of the animals I have are called. We saw crocadiles, more monkeys (stopped a long time to feed them, John fed them 3 times), Jesus Christ Lizard (because they can walk on the water) and lots of birds (one king fisher and one pink bird that was not a flamingo - they do not live in costa rica.
The water was murky brown because the tide is going up stream in the river. The river level goes up and down as the tide goes up and down. It was a pleasant trip and a great way to see lots of animals in the wild all in one day.
